Hey parents, it’s that time of year again School’s out! That magical time when the school bell stops ringing and the kitchen becomes your new classroom/mad science lab. And what better way to spend those long, sunny days than cooking up some fun with the kids and keeping them entertained?
I have just the thing for you: Spanish-inspired recipes; vibrant, simple, and packed with flavor, new skills and learning opportunities. No culinary degree needed, just a little curiosity and a lot of olive oil.
Whether you’ve got mini chefs, picky eaters, or kids who just love to stir stuff, these recipes are the perfect way to bond, learn, and make tasty memories together.
Churros & Chocolate
Yes, churros. The holy grail of fun food. And yes, you can totally make them at home.
Why kids love it: Dipping dough into chocolate = JOY.
Why adults love it: It’s easy, and the house smells like heaven.
Ingredients:
For the churros:
- 1 cup water
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 cup plain flour
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 egg
- Oil for frying (sunflower or vegetable)
- Cinnamon sugar (1/2 cup sugar + 1 tsp cinnamon)
For the chocolate sauce:
- 200g dark chocolate
- 1 cup milk
- 1 tbsp cornstarch
- 2 tbsp sugar (optional)
Method:
- In a saucepan, bring water, sugar, butter, and salt to a simmer.
- Add flour all at once and stir until it forms a dough ball.
- Let cool slightly, then beat in the egg until smooth.
- Spoon into a piping bag with a star tip.
- Heat oil in a deep pan. Pipe strips of dough into the hot oil, cutting with scissors.
- Fry until golden (about 2 minutes per side). Drain and roll in cinnamon sugar.
- For the chocolate sauce: melt chocolate with milk, stir in sugar and cornstarch, and simmer until thick.
Serve warm. Eat immediately. Try not to fight over the last one.
Tip: Bake them or air fry instead of deep-frying for a slightly healthier twist (and less hot oil anxiety). Use a piping bag and let the kids get creative with shapes.
Mini Spanish Tortilla Muffins
Think of these as eggy tapas cupcakes. Tortilla española, traditionally made with eggs, potatoes, and onions gets a kid-friendly makeover.
Kid task: Whisking eggs, layering potatoes, and sprinkling cheese.
Parent bonus: They store well and are great for lunchboxes.
Ingredients:
- 4 medium potatoes, peeled and diced
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 6 eggs
- 1/2 cup grated cheese (cheddar or Manchego!)
- Olive oil
- Salt & pepper
Method:
Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Sauté potatoes and onion in olive oil until soft and golden (about 10 minutes). Let cool.
- In a bowl, whisk the eggs with cheese, salt, and pepper.
- Stir in the cooled potato mixture.
- Spoon into greased muffin tins and bake for 15-18 minutes, until puffed and golden.
- Cool slightly before serving.
Extra tips: Add ham, peas, or red pepper strips for extra flavor. No two muffins have to be the same, let each one make their own “signature tortilla.”
DIY Pintxos Party
Pronounced “pinc-chos”, these little skewered bites from northern Spain are ideal for creative little hands. Think of it as snack-crafting.
Hosting a Pintxos Party at home is perfect for kids, adults, and anyone who enjoys creating delectable bites. You can go wild with combinations or keep it simple. Best part? No cutlery needed.
Kids bonus: Make edible art and name their pintxo creations.
Parents bonus: A great opportunity for the little ones to try new ingredients or eat healthy foods you have been trying to convince them to try.
Pintxos Combo Ideas:
You can create a pintxo with just about anything you like, as long as there is a slice of bread and a cocktail stick involved, anything goes. Here is a list of some of my favorite combinations.
Manchego, Membrillo & Basil
Slice of Manchego, topped with a square of quince paste (membrillo), garnished with fresh basil. Secure with a toothpick.
Chorizo, Piquillo Pepper & Olive
Fold a thin slice of chorizo, stack with a roasted pepper strip and green olive. Skewer and serve.
Goat Cheese, Honey & Walnut
Spread goat cheese on toast rounds, drizzle with honey, and top with a walnut. Sweet, creamy and crunchy.
Tuna, Roasted Red Pepper & Boiled Egg
A traditional pintxo de atún. Spoon tuna onto bread, top with a sliver of roasted pepper and a slice of hard-boiled egg.
Set everything out buffet-style and let everyone build their own combos and be creative. Think of it as building LEGO, only way more tastier.
Frozen Yogurt Lollies: A Cool Summer Healthy Treat
Let’s face it: kids LOVE lollies. But store bought ones? Loaded with sugar and artificial coloring are not necessary when you can have fun making your own.
Frozen Yogurt Lollies, your go-to summer treat that is fun to make, loaded with real fruit, and low on all of the bad stuff.
Ingredients (Makes 6–8 lollies):
- 2 cups plain Greek yogurt (or any thick natural yogurt)
- 1/4 cup honey (or to taste – you can also use agave or maple syrup)
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup strawberries, chopped
- 1/2 cup mango, chopped (or use peaches, nectarines, or pineapple)
- 1/2 cup blueberries
Optional: A squeeze of lemon or orange juice to give it an extra punch.
Method:
- In a mixing bowl, combine the yogurt, honey, and vanilla. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed.
- Wash, peel, and chop the fruit into small pieces. If you prefer a smoother texture, you can mash the fruit slightly or purée it in a blender.
- Get your lolly molds ready. Begin layering fruit and yogurt- start with a spoonful of fruit, then yogurt, then repeat. For a marbled effect, gently swirl the layers with a skewer or chopstick.
- Tap the molds gently on the counter to remove air bubbles and help everything settle. Insert sticks, then freeze for at least 4-6 hours, or overnight.
Remove from mold & enjoy:
To unmold, run warm water over the outside of the mold for a few seconds. Serve immediately.
Optional Extras:
-Add crushed cookies or crackers, nuts, or granola at the bottom for a crunch.
-Use coconut yogurt for a tropical twist.
-Blend the fruit and yogurt together for a smoothie style lolly.
Bonus Ideas:
- Create a “Tapas Passport” and stamp each recipe as you try it.
- Teach them a few Spanish food related words: “huevo” (egg), “pan” (bread), “queso” (cheese), “jamon” (ham), and learn a new language together.
